Bus and cars are the most common modes used for accessing the city from the hinterland. About 60% of rail links are used for long run. Regional rail transport supply is quite poor. Urban trips are made almost completely by car, while urban mass transport (bus) is used mostly by “weak” users that do not have cars available to them. The island of Ortigia is characterized by narrow and busy streets. Pedestrians and vehicles are therefore often in conflict. In addition, there is strong 'cultural’ or attitudinal problems associated with walking and cycling.
