ACTION IN WORK PACKAGE 4

WALKING & CYCLING:
We want to ...

1		Identify the local barriers to increasing walking by conducting a survey on the present travel practices

2		Promote walking among the population and in particular the important tourist sector

3		Remove barriers for reduced mobility people and elders to reinforce social cohesion

4		Improve pedestrian facilities

5		Set up a methodology to increase the walking accessibility to the Ortigia island

6		Publish an information dossier for the experts and for the decision makers

BARRIERS IN WORK PACKAGE 4

1		Walking: People are often discouraged from walking by the lack of route information, the street environment and a perceived lack of safety

2		Public Transport: There is a lack of information on journey times and duration and a difficulty in planning journeys involving different buses and trains

3		Flexible working: High start up costs can often deter employees from working at home, as well as employers from supplying the equipment necessary to do this

1		Poor support by the public authorities of local and provincial energy-transport programming and management

2		Lack of cycle-tracks

3		Inadequate resources and knowledge by employers to implement travel plans
