Siracusa is one of the most ancient cities in the Mediterranean region.The island of Ortigia is the oldest part of the city and it is best experienced by walking around its typical lanes and buildings. The city has a classical past with Arabic influences and Baroque monuments and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is the fourth largest town in Sicily, with a population of about 120,000 residents, slightly decreasing in the last 10 years. The province has about 400,000 residents. The main economic activities are agriculture, commerce, petroleum industries (the port of Augusta). Siracusa is one of the Mediterranean cities of the Barcelona action plan.
